1) Firefox Web Browser - Not an alternative anymore, it is the definitive broswer. CompuTechs+ Tip: Control+T is your best friend in web browsing.
2) OpenOffice - A Microsoft Office alternative. Basically includes all functionality except Macro support. Don't know what they are? Then you don't need 'em.
3) GIMP - An Adobe Photoshop alternative. Highly recommended, and of course, free; the Gimpshop project (plasticbugs.com) even makes it look like Photoshop.
